ustralian Open is a
tennis tournament
held annually over the
last fortnight of January.
Chronologically, it is
the first Grand Slam
tennis event of the year. It is organized in
Melbourne, the cultural capital and the second
largest city in Australia. The primary courts
are the Rod Laver Arena, which is at the same
time the largest, and the Hisense Arena (once
called the Vodafone Arena), while among other
courts, there is the Margaret Court Arena, the
third largest court. Australian Open has been
won by the largest number of tennis players,
compared to other Grand Slam tournaments.
The first Australian Open was held in
1905. Just like other Grand Slam tournaments,
it was one of the most respectable competitions
for tennis players, and it was called Australian
Championships until it was renamed in
